When parents ask me if strength training is safe for teenagers, my answer is always the same:
Absolutely—when it’s done correctly.
I’ve been a personal trainer for more than 14 years and have proudly called The Club Inc. home for over a decade. During that time, I’ve worked with people of all ages and fitness levels, but some of the most rewarding moments of my career have come from working with teenagers.
Living here on Hawaiʻi Island, we are incredibly fortunate. Our kids grow up in a place where being active is simply part of life. They paddle with canoe clubs, surf before or after school, play football, volleyball, soccer, baseball, wrestling, swim, hike, and enjoy countless outdoor activities year-round thanks to our beautiful weather.
These sports build discipline, teamwork, and character. Strength training supports those passions by improving balance, coordination, and power, enhancing endurance, and reducing the risk of injury.
But after all these years, I’ve learned something important.
The greatest benefit of strength training isn’t always physical.
It’s confidence.
More Than a Personal Trainer
One experience has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to shape the way I work with young people today.
Years ago, The Club had a teen training program led by a retired local high school coach. When he retired from the program, I inherited several of his teenage athletes, including one young girl who made it very clear she did not want to be there.
To say she disliked personal training would be an understatement.
Every workout felt like pulling teeth.
She didn’t enjoy exercising. She wasn’t excited to be in the gym. She didn’t believe she belonged there.
But neither of us gave up.
Instead of forcing her into workouts she hated, I spent time getting to know her. I learned what interested her, what motivated her, and what made her feel successful. Slowly, I began tailoring every workout around her personality instead of simply following a program.
Something amazing happened.
She started looking forward to coming to the gym.
With consistency came trust.
With trust came honest conversations.
Between sets, we’d talk about everything—school, friendships, boys, fears, food, body image, confidence, and the pressure so many teenagers quietly carry every day.
From the beginning, I had three simple rules during our sessions.
No negative self-talk.
No giving up.
Positive affirmations only.
That didn’t mean life was always easy. It meant we learned to replace criticism with encouragement and celebrate progress instead of perfection.
Week after week, I watched this quiet, shy teenager transform into a confident young woman.
She stood taller.
She smiled more.
She began believing in herself.
Her mother hired me to help her daughter become stronger.
What neither of us expected was that we’d both gain so much more.
Our training sessions became a mentorship.
I wasn’t simply helping her build muscle—I was helping her build confidence, resilience, self-respect, and a healthier relationship with herself.
To this day, that experience reminds me that the greatest transformation doesn’t happen when someone changes their body.
It happens when they change the way they see themselves.
Building a Positive Body Image
Today’s teens face challenges my generation never experienced.
Social media constantly tells them how they should look.
Filters create impossible standards.
Comparison has become part of everyday life.
That’s why I believe the gym should never be about chasing perfection.
It should be about discovering what your body can do.
I especially love watching young girls realize that strength is beautiful.
The moment they perform their first push-up, lift a weight they never thought possible, improve their paddle stroke, run faster than they did a month ago, or simply walk into the gym without feeling intimidated—that confidence carries far beyond the gym floor.
They begin trusting themselves.
They stop focusing on what their bodies look like and start appreciating what their bodies are capable of.
That mindset is something they’ll carry for the rest of their lives.
Supporting Big Island Athletes
Many of our local teens dream of taking their sport to the next level.
Whether that’s competing in college, preparing for the next season, or earning a starting position, individualized strength training can make a tremendous difference.
We also understand something many parents already know.
Coaches care deeply about their athletes, but they also have entire teams to coach. They don’t always have the time to focus on each athlete’s specific weaknesses, movement patterns, mobility, or nutrition.
That’s where we can help.
At The Club Inc., we offer one-on-one personal training and affordable small-group training designed to complement what athletes are already doing with their teams.
We can focus on:
- Strength development
- Speed and agility
- Functional movement
- Injury prevention
- Mobility and flexibility
- Sport-specific conditioning
- Nutrition guidance to support performance and recovery
Our goal isn’t to replace a coach.
Our goal is to help athletes become stronger, healthier, and more prepared when they step back onto the field, court, ocean, or track.
Fitness Is for Every Teen
Not every teenager who walks through our doors is an athlete.
Some simply want to become healthier.
Some want more confidence.
Some have never stepped foot inside a gym before.
Others are looking for a positive environment where they can learn how to exercise safely.
No matter where they’re starting, every teen deserves to feel welcome.
Our staff takes pride in creating an environment that encourages, supports, and celebrates every success—big or small.
A Safe Space Parents Can Trust
As a trainer, one of the questions I hear most from parents is, “Will my child be safe here?”
The answer is yes.
One of the things that makes The Club Inc. different is our commitment to safety.
Our facilities are member-only, meaning our doors remain locked and access is controlled through secure member entry.
We also have security cameras located throughout the gym, providing an added layer of protection and peace of mind.
Parents can feel confident knowing their teenager is training in a secure, welcoming environment surrounded by caring professionals.
Safety isn’t just a policy.
It’s part of who we are.

Final Thoughts
If there’s one thing I’ve learned after more than 14 years as a personal trainer, it’s this:
The strongest people aren’t always the ones who lift the heaviest weights.
They’re the ones who learn to believe in themselves.
Helping young people discover that confidence has been one of the greatest privileges of my career.
If I can help one teenager leave the gym standing a little taller than when they walked in, then I’ve accomplished something much greater than a workout.
I’ve helped prepare them for life.
I hope to meet you and your family soon.
